Gower Loop 17 February 2008

I persuaded Martin (Griff) to head off to the Gower rather than pound around Afan again. He had never ridden the Gower and it was a cold but gloriously clear day. We parked at Penmaen and headed up on to the top of Cefn Bryn. Griff had asked the question 'how long is this ride?' about two hours I said. Half way along Cefn Bryn we turned left on to the main road and went down through the village of Reynoldston. The smell of Sunday lunch from the pub made me feel hungry. A quick stop in the Mini market at Knelston and we were fuelled up and on our way. We took the Gower Way through the fields behind the Church at Llandewi and eventually came to a track which took us towards Middleton. Just before Midleton we turned right and climbed Rhossili Down to thr Trig point. The view from the top was stunning. So we took a few pictures. The ride along the Downs is a cracker, one of the best with views of Worms Head and across Carmarthen Bay. This trip had a double purpose. We rode through

The weather forecast looked good for Sunday so the question was asked 'where are we paddling?' I fancy doing Carmarthen Bay said Eurion. What do you mean doing Carmarthen Bay I queried. Well paddling across it. That sounds an awfully long way. Apparently it is about 48km. The logistics of such a paddle needed a bit of thought and required a shuttle wagon to be left in Tenby on Saturday night ready for the afternoon finish on Sunday. This resulted in a rushed set up and not enough regard for the six P's. We decided to leave from Penclawdd, there was a good place to park the car and the launch was easy. High tide was 8.15am and we left on time which is very unusual for me. The paddle down the estuary was a good warm up and it was flat calm so we went straight down the middle. Before we were half way to Whiteford Lighthouse the swell was clearly visible on the horizon. I was not too impressed by this or the continuous whitewater further out on the horizon so I persuaded Eurian
